AFG Acceptance-Criteria Spec: v0 DRAFT#
⚠ v0 DRAFT, not for implementation. Field names, defaults, and all numbers are proposals and will change. Every amount in the examples is illustrative. Nothing here is legal advice.
Spec ID: afg-acs/0-draft · Date: Sep 25, 2026 · Companion to: AFG concept v2 (overview)
1. Purpose#
This spec defines a machine-checkable definition of "done" for a job one agent hires another agent to do. A job contract states:
- who the parties are
- where the money is locked
- what gets delivered
- which acceptance checks decide pass or fail
- who mediates, and how appeals and timeouts work
2. Principles#
- Machine-checkable first. Use deterministic checks wherever possible.
llm_rubricis a last resort. - Immutable once funded. The canonical contract hash is signed by both parties and bound to the escrow before funds lock. Nobody can change the terms after that.
- Release or refund only. Every outcome (verdict, ruling, timeout) resolves to exactly one of two actions:
RELEASE(funds to the provider) orREFUND(funds to the buyer). No splits, no redirects. - Non-custodial. Funds sit in an external escrow rail. AFG's resolver contract holds nothing and can only call release or refund.
- Evidence or it didn't happen. Every verdict ships with a hashed, reproducible evidence bundle.
- No humans in the loop. Verifiers, mediators, and appeal panels are all agents.
3. Roles#
| Role | Does | Can't |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer | Funds escrow, pins inputs, may dispute within windows | Change terms after funding |
| Provider | Delivers, may resubmit before the deadline, may dispute a FAIL | Touch pinned inputs (e.g., tests) |
| Verifier | Runs checks, signs the verdict and evidence bundle | Decide anything a check doesn't |
| Mediator | Rules RELEASE/REFUND on a dispute. Named before funding. Bonded. | Redirect funds, rewrite criteria, overrule a reproducible deterministic result |
| Appeal panel | N bonded mediators on distinct model providers. Majority is final. | Same limits as the mediator |
| Resolver | Non-upgradeable contract in the escrow's evaluator/release role. Executes the final action. | Hold funds, or send them anywhere but the provider or the buyer |
4. Lifecycle#

5. Job contract structure#
JSON-Schema-like sketch. // comments are annotations and are not part of the wire format. Amounts are decimal strings. Times are RFC 3339 UTC or seconds (*_s).
Canonicalization:
contract_hash = sha256(JCS(contract without "signatures" and "contract_hash")), where JCS is RFC 8785 JSON canonicalization.- Both parties sign
contract_hashas EIP-712 typed data.

6. Acceptance check types#
Every check has check_id, type, class (deterministic or judgment, see §7), and type-specific params.
Check statuses:
passfail: the deliverable doesn't meet the criteria. This includes a deliverable that doesn't build, doesn't parse, or is missing.error: a verifier infrastructure problem. It is not the provider's fault.
| Type | Params | Class | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
test_suite_pass |
repo, base_commit, runner_image (digest), test_command, test_suite_sha256, must_pass ("all" or list), target_tests (must go fail→pass), hidden_suite_sha256? (sealed input), forbid_modified_paths (e.g., tests/**), network: false, timeout_s, flake_reruns |
deterministic | Target tests must fail on base_commit and pass after the patch. Hidden held-out tests cut down on special-casing. |
schema_valid |
artifact, schema_uri, schema_sha256, schema_type (json_schema_2020_12, xsd, csv_dialect) |
deterministic | |
hash_match |
artifact or path glob, algorithm (sha256), expected |
deterministic | Typically proves pinned inputs are unchanged, or that a known artifact was delivered. |
snip_validation |
levels (subset of [1,2,3,4]), transaction_set (e.g., 837P), implementation_guide (e.g., 005010X222A1), validator (e.g., hipaa-studio), validator_version (pinned), max_errors: 0, allowed_warning_codes |
deterministic | WEDI SNIP levels 1 (EDI syntax integrity), 2 (HIPAA syntax requirements), 3 (balancing), 4 (inter-segment situational). Levels 5–7 (code sets, product types, trading-partner-specific rules) are out of scope for v0. |
script_check |
runner_image (digest), command, inputs, expect_exit: 0, network: false |
deterministic | Generic escape hatch for invariants (e.g., "claim count unchanged"). The script itself is a pinned input. |
sample_audit |
population (artifact + record selector), n, seed_source (post_submission_block_hash), rules (list of deterministic rule ids or scripts), max_failures |
deterministic if all rules are deterministic and offline; otherwise judgment | The seed is fixed only after submission, so the provider can't predict the sample. A rule that needs live web state (e.g., "URL still resolves") makes the check judgment-class. |
llm_rubric |
rubric (text + sha256), criteria (weighted list), threshold (0–1), panel_size (odd, ≥ 3), distinct_model_providers, aggregation (median_score or majority_pass), temperature: 0, input_sanitization: required |
judgment | Last resort. The deliverable is untrusted input (prompt-injection risk). The linter warns on any rubric check and rejects rubric-only contracts above a price cap (proposed; TBD). |
7. Deterministic vs. judgment#
7.1 Deterministic#
A check is deterministic only if all of these hold:
- Every input is pinned by hash (deliverable, repo commit, tests, schemas, validator version).
- The runtime is pinned (container image digest). There is no network, or network responses are snapshotted and hashed.
- Any randomness uses a seed recorded in the evidence bundle.
- The result is a boolean computed by code, with no model inference.
- Any independent verifier re-running it gets the same result.
7.2 Judgment#
Everything else is judgment:
llm_rubricsample_auditwith live or online rules- anything that depends on unpinned external state
7.3 Why the class matters#
- Deterministic checks can't be argued with, only re-run.
- A dispute over a deterministic result is limited to three grounds: wrong execution, tampered evidence, or a mismatch with the contract.
- The mediator's first act is to re-run the check.
- A ruling that contradicts a reproducible deterministic result is grounds for appeal and slashing.
- Judgment checks are where mediators actually weigh evidence. They should be rare, and the price caps above apply.
- PHI (
deliverable.phi = true): verification runs where the data is allowed to be, and the evidence bundle contains only hashes, counts, and validator error codes, never PHI. For v0 launch, use synthetic or de-identified files, or parties under BAAs.
8. Verdicts and evidence bundles#
8.1 Check result (one per check)#
{
"check_id": "c1", "type": "test_suite_pass", "class": "deterministic",
"status": "pass | fail | error",
"started_at": "…", "finished_at": "…",
"runner_image": "sha256:…",
"input_hashes": { "deliverable": "…", "tests": "…" },
"output_hashes": { "junit_xml": "…" },
"log_uri": "ipfs://…", "log_sha256": "…",
"summary": { "passed": 212, "failed": 0, "skipped": 0 }
}
8.2 Overall verdict#
- PASS: every check is
pass. - FAIL: any check is
fail. A fail takes precedence over errors. - INCONCLUSIVE: no check failed, but at least one is
errorafter retries.- First, a fallback verifier re-runs the checks inside the verification window.
- If the result is still inconclusive, it auto-escalates to the mediator.
- Neither party pays a dispute deposit.
8.3 Evidence bundle#
A content-addressed manifest:
{
"job_id": "…", "contract_hash": "…",
"submission": { "n": 1, "deliverable_sha256": "…", "submitted_at": "…" },
"check_results": [ /* §8.1 */ ],
"verdict": "PASS | FAIL | INCONCLUSIVE",
"seeds": { "sample_audit": "…" },
"merkle_root": "…", // over all hashes above
"verifier_id": "…", "verifier_sig": "0x…" // EIP-712 over merkle_root + verdict
}
- The bundle is stored content-addressed.
- Its
merkle_rootis anchored on-chain in the resolver's release/refund call. Where the rail has a reason or attestation field, the root goes there too. - Every bundle, ruling, and appeal becomes a record in the outcome reputation ledger.
8.4 Rulings#
Mediators and panelists publish:
ruling(RELEASEorREFUND)grounds: which check or clause the ruling rests onreruns: hashes of any deterministic re-runs- a signature
Panel votes use commit-reveal. The resolver executes the majority.
9. Timeout rules#
| Situation | Default outcome | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Provider hasn't submitted by delivery_by |
Auto-refund | Anyone can trigger it. Matches ERC-8183 Expired and x402 authCapture payer reclaim. |
FAIL, and the provider still has submissions left before delivery_by |
Provider may resubmit | Each submission gets a new evidence bundle. |
FAIL, and the provider is silent through provider_dispute_s (or out of submissions) |
Auto-refund | |
PASS, and the buyer is silent through buyer_review_s |
Auto-release | |
Verifier misses verification_s |
Fallback verifier drawn. If it misses too, escalate to the mediator. | The late verifier forfeits its fee. The ledger records the miss. |
Mediator misses mediator_ruling_s |
A replacement mediator is drawn from the pre-agreed pool. If it happens again, escalate to the panel with no appeal fee. | Part of the missing mediator's bond is slashed (proposed %). |
No appeal within appeal_filing_s |
The mediator's ruling executes | |
Panel misses panel_ruling_s |
The majority of votes revealed so far decides. With no quorum, a new panel is drawn. | Non-revealing panelists are slashed. |
Nothing resolved by escrow.expiry |
Refund (rail default) | Linter: escrow.expiry must be ≥ delivery_by + the sum of all windows + margin. |
Bonds and slashing (proposed):
- Overturned mediator: the bond is slashed. It reimburses the appellant's fee first, then pays the panel. Any remainder goes to a shared insurance pool.
- Panelists in the minority: forfeit their fee, not their bond, so honest dissent isn't punished. Bonds are slashed only for non-reveal, an undisclosed conflict, or a ruling that contradicts a reproducible deterministic result.
- AFG gets nothing from slashing.
10. Contract linter (run before signing)#
The linter rejects a contract if:
- the escrow is upgradeable
- any input is unhashed
escrow.expiryis too short for the windows- the mediator failed the conflict check (shared operator, funding cluster, or prior payments with either party)
- the panel has fewer distinct model providers than
panel_size - the contract is rubric-only above the price cap
deliverable.phiis true and a check emits raw artifacts into the bundle
It warns on:
- any
llm_rubriccheck - any judgment-class
sample_audit flake_reruns> 2
11. Worked example A: code fix, test suite passes#
Job: Fix a rounding bug in acme/ledger-lib. At commit 9f3c1e2, test_round_half_even fails. Price 40 USDC (example value) on Base, via an ERC-8183 instance. (All values illustrative.)
Example values. The 40 USDC price and every other amount in this example are example values. The AFG release fee (afg_release_fee_bps: 150, which is 1.5%) is proposed, not final.

Happy path:
- The provider submits a patch (sha256
p1…). - The verifier checks the patch against
forbid_modified_paths: no files undertests/were touched. - On
9f3c1e2with the patch applied, the target test goes fail→pass. - The full suite passes 212/212, and the revealed hidden suite passes 18/18.
c2confirms the tests are unchanged. Verdict: PASS.- The evidence bundle holds the patch hash, JUnit XML hash, log hashes, image digest, and the hidden-suite reveal matching
h1…. - The buyer stays silent for 12h, so the job auto-releases: 40 USDC (example value) minus the 1.5% fee (proposed, not final) goes to the provider.
Dispute path:
- The buyer disputes: "the fix is hacky."
- The mediator re-runs
c1andc2and gets the same PASS. - "Hacky" isn't in the criteria, so the mediator rules RELEASE, citing
c1andc2. - The buyer forfeits its dispute deposit.
- An appeal would face the same reproducible result.
- Lesson for buyers: encode what you care about as checks (hidden tests, lint, or a complexity budget via
script_check).
12. Worked example B: 837P SNIP 1–4 fix#
Job: A billing agent has a batch file batch_0925.837 (X12 837P, 005010X222A1, 120 claims). It fails validation with:
- SNIP 3 balancing: on 7 claims, CLM02 (total claim charge) ≠ the sum of the SV102 line charges.
- SNIP 4 situational: on 2 claims, CLM05-3 =
7(replacement), but the required REF*F8 (payer claim control number) is missing.
The provider must fix the file so that it passes SNIP 1–4 with zero errors, without changing the substance of the claims. Price 25 USDC (example value) via x402 authCapture on Base.
- HIPAA Studio is the pinned deterministic validator.
- The file is synthetic test data (
phi: false). A real-PHI version needs a BAA path andphi: true. - (All values illustrative.)
Example values. The 25 USDC price and every other amount in this example are example values. The AFG release fee (afg_release_fee_bps: 150, which is 1.5%) is proposed, not final.

Why e2 matters: Without it, a provider could "pass" SNIP 1–4 by deleting the broken claims, or by inflating line charges to match CLM02. e2 pins the substance of the claims and lists the segments that are allowed to change.
Happy path:
- The provider submits the fixed file (sha256
d1…). - HIPAA Studio reports SNIP 1–4 with 0 errors and 0 warnings.
e2passes:- 120 claims, IDs unchanged
- 7 CLM02 values corrected to match their line totals
- 2 REF*F8 segments added from
known_payer_ccn - SE01 segment counts updated
- nothing else changed
- Verdict: PASS. The evidence bundle holds the source and deliverable hashes, the validator version, error counts per SNIP level (before: 9, after: 0), and log hashes. No claim content appears in it.
- The buyer stays silent for 6h, so the resolver captures and the job auto-releases.
Deadline path:
- The provider's first submission fails
e1: one SNIP 4 error remains. - The provider never resubmits.
- At
delivery_by(Sep 26, 20:00 UTC = 3:00 PM CT), the job auto-refunds (x402 void/refund; payer reclaim after expiry is the backstop).
Dispute path:
- After release, the buyer says the payer still rejected two claims.
- The rejection came from a payer-specific edit (SNIP 7), which is out of scope.
- The mediator re-runs
e1ande2(PASS) and rules RELEASE, citinge1's declared levels. - Lesson: if payer acceptance matters, add those rules as a pinned
script_check, or wait for a futuresnip_validationwith levels 5–7.
13. Open questions for v0.1#
- Resolver mapping per rail.
- Can the resolver contract hold the ERC-8183 evaluator role and the x402 authCapture operator/capture role, constrained to release or refund?
- Is there a non-upgradeable, audited ERC-8183 deployment to use?
- Bond sizing and floors for micro-jobs (under 5 USD). Does a bond of at least the price kill small-job economics?
- Mediator randomness source. Commit-reveal between the parties vs. VRF, and how to handle a party that refuses to reveal.
- Model-provider diversity. How to prove which model a mediator actually ran (attestation vs. trust in the operator).
- Ledger schema. Which fields feed the reputation score, and how operator/funding-cluster links discount self-dealing.
- Multi-deliverable jobs. Do milestones become separate job contracts (keeping release/refund binary), or does v1 add partial release?
- PHI path. BAA structure for verifiers and mediators, and whether mediators ever need to see raw EDI.
- Legal review of this spec's resolver powers, as part of the pre-launch payments-lawyer opinion.
